Isla de Coche & Semana Santa (Easter Week) on Margarita

As I write this latest blog, we have two days left before we start our journey home. During this last week we explored a new island, a new beach and enjoyed the Easter celebrations here on Margarita! As mentioned before after a day trip to the island of Coche, we decided to return to their all inclusive resort for a few days. The price was right and the stunning pools and beach attracted us so we thought - what the heck - vacation from a vacation! The pools were beautiful and sparkling clean. The food was very good and the drinks and rooms were marginal but the pools made up for it!! Here are a few shots of the resort.

Coche is a samll island only a 30 minute boat ride from the west side of Margarita. Here is Chris, Clair and Warren boarding the ferry over. The boat ride is as experience in itself!!

Fun Was Had By All (We were the only non Venezuelan people at the resort!)

Beach on Coche

We never would have believed the Easter Week celebration in Venezuela known as Santa Semanas in Spanish. Apparently Chevis declared an extra four days holiday leading up to the Easter Weekend. People from the mainland arrived in groves!! All planes and ferries were completely booked for a month leading up to the holiday. Good thing we had our flights booked to leave!!
For students and people with companies and government jobs, this means ten days off. Unfortunately the poor minimum wage job workers and business owners would have to keep slugging away to make ends meet. Essentially this means the upper crust (20%), mostly professional workers get to enjoy the vacation.

A little girl named Michele who was with her family from Caracas. She enjoyed practising the English she was learning at school with me!

Buying CD's On The Beach
We have never seen so many people on a beach! It was incredible and what fun they had. Most families bring their own coolers of beer and food and rent chairs and umbrellas from the beach bars. Hopefully you can get a sense of the atmosphere in the pictures.

This is only about 1/100 of the people on the beach!

Some Interesting Sites

Mango and Coconut For Sale
For many of the vendors and restaurant owners, this is there final chance to make a good income as after Easter slow season starts and continues until December.

Another observation is that it seems every second female, including very young girls appear to have had breast implants!! I suppose it is cheap here and if you are in the upper class you can afford it. It is quite the fashion show!!

Guess Who Took This Picture???

Gourmet Dining On the Beach

Another cute little kid!!

The owners daughter - she passes out the toilet paper and scrubs the bathroom for each client! A small tip is apprecited!

A few days ago, we went to a different beach called Playa Peurto Cruz. Another lovely beach, smaller and less touristy with the mostly the local crowd. Again, there were lots of families with their home made food and drinks enjoying the day.

Playa Peurto Cruz

Very creamy delicious pina colada's
Below is a very posh hotel and convention center called Hesperia next to Playa Cruz. They say it is for the rich and famous with a golf course. Apparently a few weeks ago the Russian prime minister and Chevis were visiting and staying here. We noticed that during that week, military helicopters were flying the coast throughout the day.

This was one of the few cloudy day we have had

Tasty Lunch

A wave similar to the one I accidently got caught in and lost my sunglasses (I did about 3 flips!!)

Well that's it for this time. Take Care everyone. I will probably do one more blog from Toronto. We are taking a few extra days on the way home to visit Chad in TO. Looking forward to that.
