Blog #10 A Week In The Life Of Margarita

Hello Everyone!! Week 4 on Margarita has been great! Hope you enjoy this blog.

I find I am using my french quite a bit on Margarita. There are quite a few Quebecois here of which they have been very friendly! With my so so french and their so so English we manage quite well. On our Jeep Safari tour there was a couple from France who did not speak English. I was able to translate the tour guide's broken English into French for them. They seemed to understand what I was saying!! As well many Venezeulans speak french rather than english for their second language so has helped on a few occasions. I had a nice chat with our catamaran guide.

Our beach life is pretty simple but seems to suit us. This is what we do and enjoy for 5-6 hours a day.

  • People Watch - locals and tourists

  • Frolic in the waves and wate

  • Read and Do X-Word Puzzles

  • Meet and Visit with local Venezeulans (sometimes we play charades but a lot can speak some English and we know a bit of Spanish)

  • Meet and Visit other tourists - from so many countries!! (a lot from Russia and Scandanavian countries)

  • Play with baby Willy

  • Watch and chat with the local vendors (what you can't buy on the beach!!)

  • Walk 4-8 kms along the beach everyday

  • Eat fresh fish and seafood for lunch and enjoy a few cervasas

  • Walk along the beach road and check out the shops and

For this blog I thought I would write up this past week's agenda as a typical one here on the island.

Saturday - Feb 20th - Dan and Kira (hotel owners) invited us to spend the day with them at Playa Caribe, have dinner and visit their family and friends. Of course we said yes!! We had such a great time and truly saw the culture of the Venezeulan people as you will see in the photos.

Local pharmacy (has to have bars to keep the robbers out, they hand you your presciption through the fence!!)

Monday - Stopped at the flea market on the way to the beach and made a few purchases. Had corn on the cob and papa fritas for lunch! Met a guy named Luke from Australia. He has been here for 5 months heading home mid April. Had a delicious potatoe soufflee stuffed with shrimp at Dona Maria's for supper, our favorite restaurant. Swam in the pool later.

We get a kick out of all the old cars - seems like you are in the 80's. They are all wrecks but no one seems to mind. Lots of these kind of taxis (pirate taxis!)

Ho Hum - a hard days work at the beach

Tuesday - Hiked up the giant hill at the north end of the beach. A bit of a work out! Had seafood soup for lunch and walked up the beach road to buy a souvenir. Back to the pizza place for ensalada and pasta for supper.

Wednesday - Enjoyed our breakfast and coffee by the pool. On the way to the beach stopped for a fresh fish empanada - very tasty! Met a young couple from London and realized we were on the same catamaran trip to Coche on Thurs. Bought mango, papaya and pineapple on the way home. Had supper at Henry's burger place on the road. They are quite the interesting burgers!!

Flag at our hotel - prevents us from being homesick!!

Thursday - Up bright and early for our catamaran snorkelling tour to the island of Coche. An all day affair for a mere $50 (includes breakfast, lunch, unlimited drinks, snorkelling and transportation)

Well that's it for a typical week in Margarita. As you will see, we were so impressed with the island of Coche that we decided to return and stay at one of the all inclusives there. Will update you on the next blog. Take Care everyone. We will be home around April 10th!!
